For me, the beginning of a new novel project is a little bit chaotic – it reminds me of the art studios in elementary school with the long paint-splattered tables and the big coffee tins of moist paint brushes and pottery kilns and random piles of rumpled canvas and smocks. Yes, definitely smocks.
It’s colorful and crazy, and intimidating at first — but the longer you sit there, the more you figure out what you’re doing.
It’s been a while since I’ve shared any updates from my creative sandbox, so here goes: these are a few of the rough and tumble sketches I’m using for a new novel about a high school cross country team…
As you can see, they’re not pretty, but they help get the wheels turning.
